A. Sautelet et Cie. Libraires,
1826.,
Paris:.
First edition.
2 volumes.xiv, [5]-390 pp. + [5]-442 pp.
The very rare first issue, with the "E" in Bourse on the title-age imprint of volume I turned 90 degrees to the right. The entire first edition consisted of only 500 copies, and was published only two months before the author's death. Brillat-Savarin's work is generally considered the foundation-stone of all modern writing on food and the arts of cooking and fine dining. While employed as a lawyer and politician, Brillat-Savarin's true gifts were as a connoisseur at the table and an aphorist on all things culinary. He is perhaps best known for his declaration, "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are." [Cagle, A Matter of Taste, 98; Crahan 491; Vicaire, col. 116-117].
Longman Brown Green Longmans and Roberts,
1859.,
London:.
First edition.
xvii, [1], 455, [8] pp. Illustrated from drawings and paintings by Kane, including 8 chromolithographed plates by Vincent Brooks (frontispiece + 7 plates in text) and 16 woodcut vignettes; folding copper-engraved map with light hand-coloring.
A magnificent copy of this important early work on the Pacific Northwest. Kane travelled throughout Western Canada and the Oregon Territory in 1846-1848. His excellent depictions of Native Americans are reproduced in this volume in striking chromolithographs that place Kane with Catlin, Bodmer and Miller among the few trained artists able to capture the western Indians before the obliteration of their culture. [Graff 2262; Howes K7; Smith 5392; Soliday II:665; Tweney 89:38; WCB-IV 322:1].
